Abstract:This special issue offers an interdisciplinary focus on non-normative sexuality and gender diversities. The authors have taken a developmental approach to the issue, a commitment that the journal promotes, by encouraging young and new contributors and authors to be in conversation with established scholars. The articles also theorise and engage with the question of what it means to be 'non-normative' in a continent that appears increasingly resistant towards same-sex identification, experience and pleasure. The articles ask about, and at times present responses to the inherited State and knowledge systems steeped in colonial and imperial histories. Contributions: Vocabularies of the non-normative (Zethu Matebeni, Thabo Msibi); 'African positionings': South African relationships with continental questions of lgbti justice and rights (Jane Bennett, Vasu Reddy); The social-political dynamics of the anti-homosexuality legislation in Uganda (Stella Nyanzi, Andrew Karamagi); Mind the gap: imagining new ways of struggling towards the emancipation of sexual minorities in Africa (Pierre de Vos); Queering the social emergence of disabled sexual identities: linking queer theory with disability studies in the South African context (Paul Chappell );.'It's not that bad': homophobia in the residences of a university in KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa (Valenshia Jagessar, Thabo Msibi); Teaching pre-service teachers about LGBTI issues: transforming the self (Nomkhosi Nzimande);.The conflicts: christianity and homosexuality (Reneilwe Mathibe); For a politics of presupposed equality: the struggle for sexual minority freedom in Africa (Jaco Barnard-Naudé); 'I believe that being a lesbian is not a curse': young black lesbian women representing their identities through photovoice (Maia Zway, Floretta Boonzaier); The persistence of homophobic discourses: narratives of a group of gay men in Cape Town, South Africa (Neil Henderson); 'Othering' non-normative sexualities through objectification of 'the homosexual': discursive discrimination by pre-service teachers (Jacques Rothmann, Shan Simmonds);Towards a queer futurity: the utopian impulse in the work of Athi-Patra Ruga and Milumbe Haimbe (Anna Stielau); Archive and method in Queer African Studies (Keguro Macharia ); Taming monsters: theorising erotic justice in Africa (Mikki van Zyl); Queer subjectivities in J.M. Coetzee's 'Disgrace' and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's 'On Monday of last week' (Aretha Phiri); Sumptuous lives: emancipatory narratives in selected stories from Queer Africa (2013) (Ayub Sheik ); Contesting public discourses on sexuality in Kenya: a reading of Kevin Mwachiro's 'Invisible' (Jennifer Muchiri ); 'Those promoting and practising homosexuality are worse than pigs and dogs': linguistic assault on homosexuals in Malawi (Gregory Kamwendo).
