Abstract: | This paper discusses the ideal of economic integration of (for the most part) anglophone and francophone West African countries that was underlying the establishment of ECOWAS in 1975. Though some progress has been made, several obstacles to economic integration remain. The article also discusses the increasing influence of China and the effects it has on the relations of the EU and the United States with ECOWAS. The authors recommend that in order for West Africa to function as a region where citizens can freely engage in cross-border economic activities, leaders should focus on people in stead of on States.
