Abstract:This article argues for governmental and non-governmental support to Liberian farmers in order to increase their agricultural productivity. Improved species, varieties and cultivars of rice, cassava, sweet potatoes, yam and eddoes are available and can lead to significant gains in production, as can the use of small tractors, solar powered equipment and water pumps. However, farmers lack knowlegde and expertise about technological improvements, as well as the means to make investments in technology. This article addresses the question of what can be done to reach farmers and assure that they can benefit from developments in agriculture. It argues that small loans, extension outreach, governmental area development programs and the involvement of private organizations are important. There is need to re-establish systems for seed supply and fertilizers, especially nitrogen fertilizers. Training programs, short seminars and meetings for farmers and agricultural workers should be scheduled to take place in the middle to late dry season (between mid-October and mid-April), which is the time of the least agricultural activity.
