| Abstract: | This special issue of 'The journal of North African studies' is based on the papers delivered at a international conference organised at School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, on 21 March 2014. The papers that came out of that conference explore the role played by contemporary Moroccan literature, cinema and popular culture - among other genres of cultural production - in revealing the complex social and political tensions in a society aspiring to freedom.
