Abstract: | The 'triple challenge' of poverty, inequality and unemployment weighs heavily on South Africa's social, political and economic fabric. Expectations have been high that the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges can make a pivotal contribution to counter these challenges. Despite laudable increases in TVET enrolment, the demand for post school further education and training (FET) band qualifications from young people not in education, employment or training remains insufficiently met. It is, furthermore, vital to secure adequate quality in TVET programmes which depend very much on the competence and commitment of college lecturers. This collective volume offers papers on the history and development of TVET programmes, as well as its current issues and challenges. Titles: Introduction: Perspectives on programmes, projects and policies in the TVET colleges / Andrew Paterson -- 1. Three decades of restructuring in further education colleges: divergent outcomes across differing global vocational education and training systems / Andre Kraak -- 2. Unfinished business: managing the transformation of further education and training colleges / Anthony Gewer -- 3. Throwing good money after bad: barriers South African vocational teachers experience in becoming competent educators / Ronel Blom -- 4. A climate for change? Vertical and horizontal collegial relations in TVET colleges / Volker Wedekind and Zanele Buthelezi -- 5. Preparing TVET college graduates for the workplace: employers' views / Joy Papier, Seamus Needham, Nigel Prinsloo and Timothy McBride -- 6. What will it take to turn TVET colleges around?
