Abstract: | This special issue of the 'Nordic Journal of African Studies' focusses on language issues in the teaching and learning domain in university education in two African countries in southern Africa - Botswana and South Africa. The papers in this special issue address students' language interactions and how language is used to negotiate learning spaces in two professional programmes at university level. Contributions: Pre-service teachers' beliefs and experiences surrounding the use of language in science classrooms: a South African case study (Nonhlanhla Mthiyane); From university writing to workplace writing: the case of social work undergraduate students at the University of Botswana (U. Nkateng and D. Kasule); Ideologies shaping language choices: views of African students on Isizulu modules in higher education at the University of Kwazulu-Natal (Thabile Mbatha).
