Abstract:This special issue sheds lights on 'The Politics of Homosexuality in Africa' through a series of in-depth analyses and ethnographic accounts. The contributions to this volume underline how the often-cited draconian legislations, the state-sponsored homophobic violence, and the heated public debates on homosexuality, should be seen not simply as the product of political chicanery and Pentecostal religious fervour, but as part of the (re)-emergence and (re)-articulation in postcolonial Africa of old and novel discourses on African independence and nation-building, of citizenship and human rights, and of morality and the place and recognition of Africa, and Africans, in the world. Contributions: The politics of homosexuality in Africa (Mattia Fumanti); Sexual orientation, (anti-)discrimination and human rights in a 'Christian nation': the politicization of homosexuality in Zambia (Adriaan van Klinken); Homosexuality, the holy family and a failed mass wedding in Catholic Northern Uganda (Henni Alava); Sexualizing politics: the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, party-politics and the new political dispensation in Uganda (Barbara Bompani & Caroline Valois); Pursuing social justice through public health: gender and sexual diversity activism in Malawi (Ashley Currier & Tara McKay); LGBT rights in a 'Republic of Therapy'. HIV/AIDS policies and the redefinition of citizenship in Cameroon (Larissa Kojoué); Violence, exclusion and resilience among Ivoirian travesties (Matthew Thomann & Robbie Corey-Boulet); Africanizing the discourse on homosexuality: challenges and prospects (Ezra Chitando & Pauline Mateveke).
