Abstract:The author discusses the ways in which Islam succeeded in influencing large portions of West Africa and shows that expansion of the faith was characterized by tolerance and a highly pragmatic approach to the problems associated with cultural contact and change. the major part of his study is devoted to a detailed examination of the impact of Islam traditional art in the Cercle de Bondoukou and west central areas of Ghana. The involvement of the Muslim Mande in Bedu, Gbain, and Do masking traditions is described in order to indicate the extent to which Islam and native religion have been able to coexist.
