Abstract: | The Sudanese memoirs of H.R. Palmer, at one time Resident in Bornu, and later lieutenant governor of the Northern Provinces of Nigeria, comprise a large number of translations from Arabic manuscripts which were mostly collected in the northern emirates of Nigeria. The first volume continues the story of the reign of Mai Idris Alooma, which the author began in a volume published in 1926; the forty four manuscripts which comprise the second volume are mostly concerned with the tribal legends or traditions of the Chad area; the third volume contains several mahrams or grants of privilege issued by the Mais (kings) of Bornu, two accounts of Ahir, the Kano chronicle, and the history of the Hausa state of Daura. |
