Abstract:This book contains a brief overview of Bambara (Mali) traditional religion. Christianity and Islam have many followers among the Bambara, but the majority have remained attached to the traditional ancestral beliefs. The Bambara recognize one God, supreme over all, Ngala or Bemba, whose fundamental role is that of Creator. The author describes the deity and the way in which it is represented, the different phases of Creation, the material objects representing the Creation, ancestor worship, various cults such as the 'dasiri' and the veneration of twins, and the initiatory societies.
