| Abstract: | The author was senior surgeon on board the 'Pleiad' during an expedition to the Niger river (Nigeria) in 1854-1855. The expedition was sent out to verify if the Benue and Tshadda rivers were in fact one stream, as suggested by Dr. Barth after his expedition of 1851-1852 from Tripoli through the Sahara to the Lake Chad area. In this report, a facsimile edition of the 1855 text, the author describes the journey up the Niger and Benue rivers, including information on the prevention and treatment of malaria and fever, and on prospects for trade up these rivers. |
