Abstract:Most studies of imperialism in Africa have focused on motivation and impact. The main emphasis of this book is on the process of expansion: the role of proconsuls, administrators, colonists, entrepreneurs and adventures. It argues that the 'men-on-the-spot' (Rhodes, the British South Africa Company, the high commissioner and his staff), who have one foot in the mother country and the other in the colonies, are the crucial agency in the process of expansion on the Tswana.
