Abstract: | This study discusses the processes by which an ethnic group manipulates some values, norms, beliefs, symbols and ceremonials from its traditional culture in order to develop an informal political organization which it uses as a weapon in its struggle for power with other groups within contemporary society. The study is based on analysis of the formation and fonctioning of a network of socially exclusive and politically autonomous Hausa communities in Yoruba towns, especially in Ibadan, as bases for the establishment of Hausa control over the lon-distance tade in certain commodities. Preface - Introduction - The migratory process: 1) Settlers and stranger; 2) Prostitutes and housewives - Landlords of the trade - The politics of long-distance trade (1906-50) - From a tribal polity to a religious brotherhood (1951-63) - The ritualization of political authority - Conclusions (Political ethnicity in contemporary African towns).
