| Abstract: | The phenomenon of the state appears in the twentyfive chapters of the present collection in various guises and images: as a structure of relations, as a process in being, as a loose empire, and as a tightly-knit social organisation. Anthropologists, historians, orientalists and sociologists contributed to a three-day conference which followed the main session of the Xth International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences in New Delhi, India. The papers discussed at the conference, and subsequently rewritten to take account of the input of the discussions, now appear together, followed by a recapitulation and critical evaluation. Its title, Ubi sumus? where are we?, characterises the whole collection, which shows the present state of research on the state, and especially its initial forms. |
