Abstract:	This volume contains 16 studies on Islam, nationalism, and radicalism in the Nile Valley during the twentieth century, which were originally presented at an international conference at the University of Haifa. Ever since military rule was established in the Nile valley the major challenge to the regimes of both Egypt and the Sudan was presented by populist Islamic movements, with radical leftist oppositions trailing far behind. But whereas in the early years it seemed that nationalist secularism was having the upperhand, since the 1970s it seemed quite clear that radical Islam was once again gaining ground at the expense of all secular ideologies.
