Abstract: | The introduction gives a brief account of the Muslim pilgrimage ceremonies (the hajj) and related themes of a religious and organizational nature. Part one traces the recorded tradition of pilgrimage from West Africa to the nineteenth century. Part two deals with the nineteenth century and discusses the attitudes to the pilgrimage, both in theory and practice, of the main jihad states. In part three an attempt on assessment of the pilgrimage factor in the fields of education, reform and social attitudes is made. |
