Abstract:The field research was done from Sept. 1966 to June 1967, when the author interviewed religious leaders, followers and those who had officially relations with the Mourides. The study is concerned with the internal structure of the brotherhood, with relations between leaders and floowers (dominance and submission); among followers (associations); and within the leadership group (hierarchy of religious authority); with the economic aspects of social relations, notably with agricultural organizations, and with the forces at present working to change the brotherhood.
