Abstract: | Born in 1905, the author witnessed most of the evolution of ecology during this century. He studied zoology in Cambridge, then undertook ecological exploration, particularly in the tropics, participated in the thinking of what ecological concepts mean in terms of conservation of resources and human progress, and later applied the concepts in practical affairs. The book includes some of these experiences. Prelude (1905-1927) - Great African Lakes (1927-33) - The African survey (1933-1937) - Ecology in the Lake District (1937-1946) - The Middle East (1944-1946) - Uganda (1946) - East Africa (1946-1951) - Pan-African science (1951-1956) - Nature conservation (1957-1964) - The International Biological Programme (1964-1974) - Fin de siècle (1975-?). |
