Title:Islam in the modern national state
Author:Rosenthal, Erwin I.J.ISNI
City of publisher:Cambridge
Publisher:University Press
Geographic term:Islamic countries
Abstract:'The problem of adjusting a medieval culture and civilization to the outlook and institutions moulded in the West, which have come to influence and determine contemporary state and society, is aggravated by the deep felt need of these states to preserve their Islamic identity, both as individuals and as nations'. This is the subject of this book, partly derived from personal observation. Parts I and II give a survey of classical political thought in Islam (the unity of religion and politics), the rise of secularizing movements (nationalism, communism) in the newly independent states, constitutional theories and changes in law (position of minorities and women). Part III examines the role of education.
