Abstract: | The multifaced and sometimes surprising roles of women in African slavery are the focus of this collection of papers. They shed new light on a number of hitherto unresolved issues: that more men than women slaves were exported from Africa across the Atlantic was not a product of New World demand but of internal African demand; that it was women's productive rather than reproductive functions that made them to desirable as slaves. The article also pays attention to women as slave owners, users and traders. |
