Abstract:As an introduction to culture-historical research, the author presents the essential ideas and teachings of Ratzel, Frobenius, Graebner, Ankermann, Schmidt, Koppers, Baumann, Jensen, and many other scholars. As far as possible the examples have been taken from African studies. Culture-historical studies, if correctly and carefully carried out, may contribute to the understanding of human culture and its development. Culture history ought to undertake an improvement if its methodology, to adapt it and its theoretical basis to modern necessities. It should also clearly depict the limits of the methodology and its conclusions.
