| Abstract: | Revised and rewritten versions of papers previously published in various journals or edited works. In part 1 a series of four studies examines the mechanisms of British rule in Egypt and the Sudan since their conquest in 1882 and 1896-1899 respectively, analyzing the trilateral relations between England, Egypt and the Sudan and the ways in which England attempted to exploit competing political elites in Egypt and the Sudan in order to maintain her supremacy without having to resort constantly to the use of force. Part 2 contains a study of Egypt's regional interests and policies in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, in which the Sudan and the Nile Valley played a constant and central role, and a study on the impact of Islam on the formulation of internal and external policies in Egypt and the Sudan from the 1950s until the present. |
