| Abstract: | Tiyo SOGA was the first ordained minister to be educated overseas, the first black missionary among Africans, the first black translator of an English classic into an African language, and the first to formulate a philosophy of Black consciousness and even negritude. He was born in 1829 on the Eastern Frontier of the Cape Colony, in the ancestral lands of the Ngqika section of the Xhosa. He died in Tutura in 1871. The book contains, besides the Journal (1857-1870), letters (1858-1871), articles in 'Indaba' (August 1862-1864), a lecture as reported in the 'Cape Argus' (7 June 1866), and a translation of several hymns. It is concluded with a genealogy of the SOGA family. |
