Abstract: | Foreword by Clifford GEERTZ. On the changing role of Islamic education, the concept of knowledge inherent in it, and the relation of its carriers to wider society from the early years of colonial rule in 20th-century Morocco to the pre sent. These complex themes are concretely presented through an intensive 'social biography', an approach which allows them to be explored in contextual detail without losing sight of more general issues of historical and social thought. The subject of the study is a rural judge, born in 1912, whose life and self-description contribute significantly to under standing the changing social role of religious intellectuals. |
