Abstract:Description and analysis of the position of Islam in this multi-religious state and of developments within the Islamic population mainly from the viewpoint of the Muslim or neutral observer. Islam presents itself neither as the liberal component of a pluralistic state nor as a monolithic bloc unable to co-operate with Christians. Local, national and international influences are described in detail. Fundamentalism in particular is the subject of an in-depth treatment. Two appendices: Three documents on the Shari'a debate - Five documents on the controversy in Oyo State regarding Islam and education.
