Abstract: | The book is concerned with the ecology of the Niger river and in particular with those features associated with its course. The book includes material on the Senegal river and lake Chad, which share the Niger's genesis and as a result have similar faunal characteristics and on the Volta river, which has attracted much attention both as a result of the construction of the Akosombo dam and more recently the campaign against river blindness (Onchocerciasis). The interaction of man and water in West Africa in general (how people use the rivers and how rivers affect people living by them) is also examined, as are three river associated diseases: sleeping sickness (Trypanosomiasis), river blindness, and bilharzia (Schistosomiasis) |
