Abstract: | On 5 November 1883 an Egyptian army under the command of Lt. General William HICKS Pasha, an English officer, was annihilated at Shaykan in Kordofan by the Sudanese forces of Muhammad Ahmad, the Mahdi. The destruction of that army, which had been sent to put down the Mahdi's rebellion against the Turco-Egyptian regime, paved the way for the siege and capture of Khartoum in 1885 and the establishment of the Mahdist State. The letters published in this volume are a source for the study of the Mahdist revolution in its military aspects and, especially, the dying days of Turco-Egyptian imperialism in the Sudan. |
