Abstract: | The Muslim extremists who murdered the Egyptian President Sadat in October 1981 left behind a pamphlet, 'Al-Far¯idah al-Gh¯a'ibah' ('The neglected duty'), written by Muhammad 'Abd al-Sal¯am Faraj (1954-1982). This internal discussion paper, that circulated among congenial strict Muslims, draws upon classical Muslim ideas and experiences of the recent past; it reaches the radical conclusion that, if necessary, force can be and should be used in the struggle for a pure Islamic State. The author of this book provides a detailed commentary on the significance and impact of the pamphlet on modern Islam, considers the response from Al-Azhar and the Sufi reaction, and discusses the teachings of two great preachers, Shayk 'Abd al-Ham¯id Kishk and Shayk Al-Sha'r¯aw¯i. Appendix: Annotated translation of 'The neglected duty'. |
