Abstract: | The author has condensed and edited chapters from two theses submitted to the University of Khartoum in 1977 and 1978, each dealing with a Sudanese tariqa (Sufi order). Awad al-Karsani investigated the politics, doctrine and organizational aspects of the Majdhubiyya tariqa which originated in the 15th century, focusing on the interplay of religion, trade and politics during the Funj, Turkish and Mahdist periods. Abdallahi Osman was concerned primarily with the organization and ritual of the Mikashfiyya, a tariqa claiming allegiance to the Qadiriyya, and with the role of the Sufi shayk, rather than with the larger political sphere. |
