| Abstract: | The Sokoto Caliphate of Nigeria was established around 1803. With the death of its founding father, Shehu Usman Dan Fodio (1754-1817), it entered upon a new phase, lasting until 1837, in which it was nurtured into an Islamic State and a centre of gravity for Islam in West Africa and beyond. The author is mainly concerned with the ideals that nourished the Caliphate, enabling it to grow from the city-state of Gobir into a West African super-state, as well as with the architect of it all, amir al-muminin Muhammad Bello. |
