Abstract: | What is Islamic education? To answer this, Islam in Sub-Saharan Africa is analyzed, and a typology of forms of Islamic education is drawn up as a function of its methods and the country. Following analyses of the cognitive system, cultural functions and social status as well as of pedagogical and sociological aspects, the place of Islamic education in national policies of education is discussed. The impact of Islamic education is assessed, and questions are raised about its contribution to spreading basic education in Sub-Saharan African lands. |
