Abstract:The extent to which Mombasa has functioned as a growth centre in Coast Province is evaluated. It is concluded that Mombasa's spread of development has been very minimal. One of the reasons for the lack of spread may be the primate city characteristics of the urban hierarchy in the region, another the poor income levels of the surrounding area. In addition, because of the region's export orientation, Mombasa has functioned mainly as a port that has a significant role in the development of the interior rather than its immediate hinterland.
