Abstract:No Muslim scholar in East Africa was as socially and politically conscious as Sheikh al-Amin bin Ali Abdallah bin Nafi al-Mazrui (1891-1947). His crusade against forces hostile to Islam by way of mobilizing Muslim public opinion through his private and public mosque seminars, through his journalistic ventures and through his scholarly publications, did a lot to provide social and religious leadership that was then lacking in East Africa. This paper evaluates the intellectual legacy of Sheikh al-Amin to East Africa through the perpetuation of certain strands of his ideas by his students, notably Sheikh Abdallah Saleh Farsy and, to a lesser extent, Sheikh Muhammad Qassim al-Mazrui.
