Abstract:In 1978, a two-month study was carried out in Lamu District, Coastal Province of Kenya, in order to investigate the feasibility of establishing a settlement scheme in the Hindi-Magogoni area. A description of Lamu District and the objectives of a settlement scheme in the Hindi-Magogoni area is followed by a report of the investigation. Attention is paid to socioeconomic conditions (living conditions, farming systems, income), farmers' attitudes towards a settlement scheme, existing infrastructure and public services, health conditions and food supply, the agro-ecological potential of the envisaged settlement area, marketing facilities, and food requirements within settled subsistence and cash crop farming.
