Abstract:This paper analyses two photographic albums presented by the Dutch inhabitants of South Africa to successive Dutch monarchs, Willem III and Wilhelmina, on the occasion of their respective silver jubilees in 1874 and 1923. The 1874 album was presented to Willem III by the literary society ('Rederijkerskamer') Aurora, in Cape Town, together with 'other Netherlanders, descendants of Netherlanders and friends of the Netherlands resident in South Africa'. The photographs were presumably meant to give His Majesty an idea of the country in which his subjects were now living. Wilhelmina's six-volume album was of an altogether more extensive form, reflecting the development of the art in the intervening half century. It was put together by Committees of Dutch inhabitants in all the provinces of South Africa. Many photographs seem to have derived from the publicity department of the South African Railways. The author argues that, notwithstanding the ever-changing visions, driven on as they are by the exigencies of commerce and the political needs of the day, there is a constant: South Africans' patriotism. This makes the choices made in the two albums more understandable. Notes, ref.
