Abstract: | The texts in this reader on African gender relations in sub-Saharan Africa reflect broad currents within the anglophone African studies and gender literature as well as the historicity of debates on gender in Africa. Much contemporary work is concerned with defining and attributing 'gender' in Africa; and with the implications of reading African lives through Western gender-lenses. Accordingly, the first section explores issues of representation through an eclectic set of five readings with referents in wider literatures. In the shift from 'women' to 'gender', attention came to focus on the production of difference and on the negotiation of relational identities, femininities and masculinities, themes reflected in the choice of the six texts in the second section. The remaining three sections work with enduring themes in the literature: livelihoods (6 readings), religion (5 readings) and governance (6 readings).
